Job Description

The Midwife will be responsible for providing maternal and newborn care services with a focus on the prevention, early detection, and management of neonatal jaundice. The midwife will work in health facilities and community settings, delivering clinical care, supporting newborn monitoring, and educating families on neonatal health and jaundice prevention. The role includes close collaboration with healthcare teams, community health workers, and families to ensure timely intervention for newborns at risk.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide routine maternal and neonatal care with a focus on the early detection and management of neonatal jaundice.
  • Conduct regular physical assessments of newborns, monitoring for signs of jaundice.
  • Administer appropriate treatments for neonatal jaundice, following established protocols, including phototherapy and referrals to higher-level care if necessary.
  • Work closely with pediatricians and healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for newborns.
  • Educate mothers and families on the causes, signs, and prevention of neonatal jaundice.
  • Provide breastfeeding support and counseling, emphasizing its role in preventing jaundice.
  • Offer guidance on monitoring infants at home for early signs of jaundice and the importance of seeking timely medical attention.
  • Participate in community outreach programs to raise awareness about neonatal jaundice and its risks.
  • Collaborate with community health workers to ensure families are informed about available services and treatment options.
  • Conduct home visits, where necessary, to follow up with newborns recently discharged from healthcare facilities.
  • Assist in training other healthcare professionals and community health workers on neonatal jaundice screening and management.
  • Support peer learning and mentoring of less-experienced midwives on neonatal care practices.
  • Accurately document all newborn assessments, treatments, and follow-up care in patient records.
  • Report any complications or critical cases to the Program Manager and refer severe cases to appropriate healthcare facilities.
  • Contribute to data collection for monitoring and evaluation purposes, including reporting on neonatal jaundice cases and treatment outcomes.
  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team, including doctors, nurses, and community health workers, to ensure continuity of care for mothers and newborns.
  • Coordinate with local health facilities to ensure timely diagnosis, treatment, and referral for neonatal jaundice cases.
  • Support community health workers to provide outreach services such as birth records, and neonatal and maternal mortality records.
  • Work with technical support and M&E teams to collect appropriate baseline data of programs.
  • Ensure adequate infection prevention and control measures are maintained in all facilities at all times.
  • Lead and advocate for quality healthcare in all facilities and communities.
  • Maintain and develop collaborative relationships with heads of governments and health facilities as well as supervise, train, and coach clinical sta.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports of activities, including data collation.
  • Supervise and facilitate data collection across all programs.
  • As well as other tasks that will arise in the line of duty.

Qualification and Experience

  • Registered Midwife (RM), Bachelor of Nursing Science (B. NSc.)
  • At least 2 years of experience in maternal and newborn care, including neonatal care. Experience in managing neonatal jaundice or related conditions is an advantage
  • Strong clinical skills in maternal and newborn health, including the ability to recognize signs of neonatal jaundice.
  • Knowledge of neonatal health interventions, including phototherapy and other jaundice treatments.
  • Excellent communication and counseling skills to educate families and promote health-seeking behavior.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and with community members.
  • Competencies:
